There are fundamental physiological and body differences between small, medium and large breed dogs.
Different growth periods:
from 8 months for the smallest breeds up to 24 months for giant breeds.
A very variable growth rate:
a small breed adult dog grows by up to 20 times his birth weight when fill
grown, however, this ratio can reach up to 100 times in giant breeds.
Energy requirements are not proportional to size:
a small breed dogs energy requirements are twice those of a large breed dog.
Specific digestive capability:
a small breed dogs digestive tract represents 7% of total body weight compared
to only 2.7% for a large breed dog.
Different life expectancy:
the larger and heavier the dog, the earlier the ageing process starts. Life
expectancy is therefore halved for Maxi breeds.
